This is an introduction to the role of women in contemporary Arab world. The course will offer an overview of women’s contribution during the Arab renaissance era and their active role in the independence of Arab states as well as their role in public space specifically during the Arab Soring. Through group discussion, live lectures, and documentaries, the students will explore Arab women’s participation in national development and their efforts to use of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to improve their status and address the issues of inequality and discrimination. In addition, the course will acquaint students with leading female writers, activists, and politicians who play a significant role in their Arab communities.
