Politics and Religion in North Africa

This course examines the role of Islam in modern North African history, politics, and culture. We will focus on the Maghreb region (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania) and Egypt. This course addresses key issues such as the role of religion in the struggle for independence, the role of Muslim reformists in preserving national identity during colonization, the relationship between post-independence nation-states and Islamic movements, and political Islam during the Arab uprisings and post-Arab spring.

Recommended language proficiency: minimum Advanced Mid-level on the ACTF proficiency scale.
