Tools of the Trade is a two-week summer intensive course in science and math skills for incoming and ongoing MIIS students. It is optional but strongly recommended for students in the International Environmental Policy (IEP) and Non-Proliferation and Terrorism Studies (NPTS) programs with limited background and/or rusty skills in chemistry, physics, and math. The class will meet four hours per day August 15-19 and August 22-26, and students will be expected to spend an equivalent amount of time on homework. The course is designed to provide essential skills that will allow students to get the most out of the IEP core course IPOL 8512, Quantitative Analysis for Environmental Science and Policy, and the NPTS gateway course IPOL 8559, WMD Science and Technology, as well as other courses in both programs that require science and math skills. Students signing up for Tools of the Trade will be contacted prior to the course regarding the syllabus, course logistics, and optional recommended readings. The principal instructor will be Dr. Mark Bishop, author of “An Introduction to Chemistry,” which will be used as a text in the course.
